Challenge

A leading lab equipment manufacturer needed a granular understanding of their environmental footprint to identify and address key emission sources.

Existing accounting methods lacked the detail to uncover hidden hotspots within their complex operations.

Approach

We conducted a deep-dive analysis, focusing on mapping processes and identifying emission hotspots. We collected data at a highly granular level, examining individual process steps, inputs and outputs. We prioritized identifying and analyzing emission hotspots using a domain-aware framework.

Our approach revealed a significant and previously undetected emission hotspot - the use of SF6 gas in their Quality Assurance process. We recommended an alternative to the current processes to reduce emissions.

Outcome

Even in small quantities, SF6 as a chemical has a high global warming potential (23000 times more than CO2). It contributed substantially (7%) to overall operational emissions for the client. This enabled the client to reduce emissions significantly with a small process change. This highlights the importance of granular analysis and domain expertise when analysing climate impact. The client not only minimized their environmental impact but also strengthened their commitment to corporate sustainability goals.
